Abstract

Process for converting raw materials in cement prodn. in which the solids forming the raw materials are heated to remove hydroxides and carbon in a vertical multi-stage heat exchanger consisting of several cyclones, and then passed to a calcining furnace in counter current to a stream of hot gas from the furnace. The flow of solids from the penultimate cyclone into the final cyclone depends on the degree of decarbonisation of the solids leaving the penultimate cyclone. A fuel and a hot combustion mixt. is pref. fed into the stream of gas leaving the furnace. The pref. device consists of a rotary drum calcining furnace and a battery of preheating cyclones. A fuel oil with a high sulphur content can be used to calcine and preheat the cement without forming deposits on the walls of the final preheating stage which normally occurs when the fuel oil contains more than 1% sulphur.
