Abstract
Purificn. appts. for the continuous treatment of polluted effluents, which contain soluble toxic molecules, e.g. and hexavalent chromium ions consists of a vertical cylindrical tank with two smaller concentric tanks all have a common base. The effluent is introduced tangentially under press. into the outer tank where its pH is measured by electrodes and adjusted to suit the chemical reaction. The liq. overflows into the intermediate tank amd then through ports into the central tank. This is also fitted with electrodes, again at different levels, for measuring the oxidn-redn. potential rH. Compressed air is introduced into the central tank through a perforated pipe to stir the reacting materials. The CN ions are destroyed by oxidn. with oxygen, ozone, hypochlorites etc., and the hexavalent chromium is reduced to the non-toxic trivalent chromium by ferrous sulphate and alkali sulphites and bisulphites. The treated effluent leaves via a pipe to go to a settlement tank. Appts. is compact and works automatically; signals from the electrodes control the pH conditions, as required, and the addition of the oxidn-redn. reagents to suit the changing contamination conditions.
