Abstract
Parent patent describes installation of a sealed and insulated tank within a ship where hold was surrounded by a secondary insulating barrier supported from the framework of the hull and sandwiched between a series of prefabricated slabs filled with insulation. The slabs were anchored to the hull shell and the barrier shells by slow curing mastic applied as strips parallel to the major axes of said slabs. Present patent covers use of alternative patterns of mastic application of anchoring the insulation slabs to the adjacent surfaces, i.e. the secondary barrier or the ship's hull, i.e. other arrangements of straight or undulating strips of mastic or patters of isolated patches of mastic, providing any air partially bounded by mastic on the slab surfaces has direct access to the edge of the slab surface and thus is able to vent any gas which might otherwise collect in the interstices of the installation. Esp. for insulating of marine holds for liquified petroleum gas tankers. Mastic patterns may be optimised for structural strength without increasing the fire risks due to trapped inflammable volatiles.
