Abstract

Process and appts. are claimed for the purification of gases by means of selective solvent, the appts. consisting of a stack of pans each sepd. into two parts. The pans are lined with surface contact elements, such as Raschig rings, and are filled with a selective solvent for the impurities to be washed from the gas. The latter rises from a pipe at the bottom of purifier through a valve and up a series of passages guided by deflectors; they leave by the pipe, the top of the purifier which is fitted with a pneumatically controlled pulsating valve. When this valve is closed the press. rapidly rises in the enclosures under the bells which divide the pans into two parts. The impurities in the gas dissolve and the liq. which contains them flows into the pans where it is de-gassed. At a certain press., the purifier is suddenly brought back into communication with the gasometer; the gas under press. in the enclosures escapes rapidly to the gasometer, the press. falls and the solvent returns to the enclosures, after being de-gassed. The pulsatory valve closes and the cycle recommences. The new purifier does not need any mechanical circulating means as it is operated by the press. of the gas itself which is produced by chemical means.
