Abstract

The trailing end of a roving which has already been treated is supported on a conveyor adjacent the rear end of which are provided a pair of fluted wheels forming a nip through which the conveyor and roving pass, the direction of rotation of the fluted wheels being reversed to move the trailing end of the roving into a suction duct beneath the fluted wheels so that the trailing end is held in the suction duct. The leading end of a roving being combed by a combing device is held in a clamp which is movable to deposit the leading end of the roving onto the trailing end of the roving and the direction of rotation of the fluted wheels is again reversed so that the trailing end of the roving moves from the suction duct and the superimposed trailing and leading ends pass through the nip of the fluted wheels and are compressed together. The device is less prone to wear than devices using a transfer bar and can be operated at higher speeds.
