Abstract

In an appts. for coating articles with powdered or granular particles, e.g. fibres or flocs, comprising in known manner an insulating support for the particles, at least one counter electrode between the insulating support and the article to be coated and a second electrode situated on the side of the support furthest from the article while a third electrode is placed in the zone of the article either in front of or behind this or formed by the article itself, the various electrodes creating (a) an a.c. field across the insulating support, for raising the particles from this and imparting to them an eddying motion and (b) a d.c. field for accelerating the particles so detached from the support in the direction of the article to be covered, the novel feature whereby (c) the electrode situated in the zone of the article is connected to earth by an electrical conductor (d) the counter electrode and the electrode facing it on the other side of the insulating support are each connected by conductors to a source of supply of an a.c. potential superimposed on a d.c. potential different from earth potential, while a protective resistance is mounted on the conductor connecting each electrode to the potential source. The coating equipment has fewer components than apparatus normally used and enables a wide range of articles to be floc-, fibre- or powder-coated. Since no stram of fluidising air is necessary the risk of fire from distruptive discharges is much less and is reduced still further by the provision of the protective resistance.
