Abstract

In the control of heat transfer from a furnace or from a hot wall to a cold wall, or of the transfer of 'cold' from a refrigerated enclosure or a cold wall to a hot wall, between which a granular heat insulant is enclosed, increased heat transfer between the wall is achieved by fluidising the insulant, a decrease being achieved by bringing it to rest. Pref. the cold wall has means for auxiliary cooling, partic. circulating cooling water. Method enables 'dead' time in thermal processes to be reduced by reducing the cooling cycle time. Process may be used e.g. in furnaces for coating oxides of fissile metals with graphite.
