Abstract
The electric motor has two cages mounted side by side on the shaft. The cage is rigidly fixed to the shaft but the cage, which is unbalanced, is attached to the shaft by a spring-loaded bolt so that it can be held in one of two positions, approximately 90 deg. apart. The polar moment of inertia of the cage is much smaller than the moment of inertia of the cage together with its shaft and flywheel. Thus when the motor is started the cage is rotated relative to the shaft to one of its extreme positions. To change the position of the cage the direction of rotation is reversed.
