Abstract

The system secures excavation with the minimum lateral disturbance and obviates stepping of trench walls etc. Each side panel (J) incorporates cutting edges (8) and three adjustable diaphragms (9, 10, 11): the trailing pair (10, 11) contg. backfill (12) and acting as a bedding (S) sand chute and the front diaphragm (9) bearing jack thrust. The jack (2) can be rotated about its support by subsidiary jacks (5, 6,) so that it receives the succeeding pipe element, counter rotation then aligning the pipe for ramming into position. The level of the trench bottom and pipe alignment is checked and adjusted as the work proceeds.
