Abstract

Electrolytic diaphragms comprise (a) a primary layer consisting of a polymer membrane contg. uniformly chemically bonded cation-exchange gps. and F atoms, and (b) a thinner secondary layer consisting of at least one electrically neutral layer and/or a layer contg. anion-exchange gps., the sec. layer being in intimate contact with at least part of the surface of the primary layer or being inside the primary layer. The diaphragms can be used in electrochemical cells for the hydrolysis, double decompsn. and redox conversion of salts and electrolysis of acids and salts, esp. in cells for the prodn. of Cl2 and alkali metal hydroxides by electrolysis of alkali metal salt solns. The diaphragms have better chemical stability and oxidn. resistance than conventional exchange resin membranes, and give higher current efficiencies for base formation and less salt diffusion than known F-contg. resin membranes.
