1518387 Membranes for chloralkali cells ASAHI GLASS CO Ltd 24 Aug 1976 [29 Aug 1975(2) 23 Sept 1975] 35210/76 Heading C7B [Also in Division C3] Chloralkali electrolysis is conducted in a cell having a fluorinated membrane formed of a copolymer of a fluorovinyl ether having the formula wherein 1 is 0 to 3; m is 0 to 6; n is 0 to 4 and one of 1 and m is not zero; X, X' and X" are the same or different and represent -F or -CF 3 ; A represents -CN, -COF, -COOH, COOR 1 , -COOM or -CONR 2 R 3 ; R 1 represents C 1 to C 10 -alkyl; R 2 and R 3 represent -H or C 1 to C 10 -alkyl and M represents an alkali metal or a quaternary ammonium group and a fluorinated olefin, or a hydrolyzed copolymer thereof. Other fluorovinyl ethers, e.g. perfluoro methyl or perfluoropropyl vinyl ether, fluoroketones, fluoronitroso compounds and fluorothio carbonyl compounds may also be used in the production of the copolymer.
