Abstract

Carbon is impregnated with metals, in order to improve the adhesion between these materials, by exposing the carbon to an alkali-metal in a controlled atmos. in order to insert alkali atoms between the panes of graphite in the carbon; raising the temp. to produce a vapour pressure due to the alkali-metal and placing the obtd. cpd. of carbon and alkali-metal in contact with a molten metal to form a composite or coated material. The reaction between the alkali-metal and the carbon can be undertaken either in vacuum or in an inert gas. Process is used, e.g. in the mfr. of composite materials consisting of metals reinforced by carbon fibres. A strong bond is formed between the carbon and the metal, as the presence of teh alkali-metal results in improved wetting of the carbon surface.
