Abstract
A rotary furnace for the continuous mfr. of solid alkali silicates has outlets with nozzles of refractory matl. the area of which may be varied according to the viscosity of the prod. Used partic. for making silicates, such as sodium silicate, nSi2Na2C (where n is 2-4) from nSiO2 and Na2CO3. The variable area outlets permit the regulation of the flow of the prod. at the precise speed which will allow fusion and reaction to proceed under optimum conditions. The rotary furnace consists of a metallic cylindrical body, with a refractory lining, length 6 to 8 times the dia. rolling on rings, and rollers driven by toothed gear at 1/4th to 1 r.p.m. and having a variable inclination between 0.5 and 2%. Matls. can be charged at an end opening and heat is supplied by a burner. in an opening at the opposite end. Near the lower extremity of the furnace wall are square or rectangular openings the number varying from 1-8, for discharge of prod. to mould where it solidifies.
