Abstract

The heat exchanger tube passes through the tube plate before fixing. The tube may be chilled or the tube plate heated to give a pre-tightening of the joint. The joint is also coated with jointing compound. A plug (14) is inserted in the tube. The plug fits between two pistons. One piston fits inside the tube. The second (8) has two diameters. One smaller than the tube and one larger. When the pistons are brought together, the tube is deformed on either side of the tube plate. The tube expanded in this way is permanently located in the tube plate.
