Abstract
In an inflatable passanger-retaining system partic. for the driver or passenger of a motor car in the event of a collision or crash, having a supply of gas under pressure for inflating an inflatable envelope and a propellant which on ignition produces carbon monoxide, the inflating gas contains (i) an inert gas forming a main component and (ii) an effective amount of 5% of oxygen for reaction with the CO present to produce CO2. Permits the amount of inert inflating gas required to be reduced by utilising the gases from the combustion of the propellant without the toxic hazards arising from the presence of CO in these gases. The inert gas may be selected from A, He or Ne and the amount of O2 may be >3 wt.%. A preferred weight composition is A = 98.5%, O2= 1.5%.
