Abstract

Butanoic-acid deriv. of formula H2N.CH2.CH2.OCH2CH2 CH(NH2)CO2H (I) and its pharmaceutically acceptable acid addn. salts are new, esp. (I) is the L- or D,L- forms, increase ethylene formation in fruit so may be used as a plant-growth regulator, esp. to encourage fruit drop particularly for citrus fruit. (I) is prepd. using the following methods: (a) by catalytic reduction of trans H2NCH2CH2OCH=HCC(NH2)NCO2H, (b) by condensing R1HN.CH2.CH2.OCH2.CH2R2 with MC(CO2Et)2NHR3 (R1 and R3 and N-protecting gpps, R2 = Cl, Br or I; M = alkali metal). The protecting gps. are then removed.; (c) racemic (I) may be resolved by diacylation and treatment of the diacylate with pig kidney acylase. (d) cultivation of Streptomyces sp. X-11085 (NRRL 5331) on conventional media to give L-(I). Pref. the filtered broth is treated by ion-exchange or absorption chromatography.
