Abstract

A pneumatic tyre has cross-ply reinforcement with additional reinforcement at both shoulders of the tread. This additional reinforcement is circumferential and consists of a material which shrinks at vulcanisation temp. and presses the extreme edge of the diagonal ply layer below it onto the diagonal layer below that. The width of the additional reinforcement is pref. about one-tenth of the total tread width. The effect of the gripping action on the diagonal ply is to prevent the ends from slipping and thus to ensure that the ends of the diagonal cords accept the same tension as the middle portions.
