Abstract
Chlorination of Ti, Si, V, Nb, ta, W or Nb, or an alloy contg. >=1 of these metals, in a fused salt of NaCl or KCl and chlorides of Fe, Cu or Cr, takes place by introducing Cl2 in liquid form, below surface of fused salts. Cl2 absorption in bath is improved and chlorination capacity is increase. Cl2 vapourisation takes place in bath or melt and helps to achieve a partial cooling. PRef. used salt bath temp. is kept above 700 degrees C esp when working on an industrial scale. Cl2 is maintained in liquid form by cooling supply conduits, e.g. to -35 degrees C at atmos. pressure.
