1484596 Tubular heat exchangers; boilers INTERATOM INTERNATIONALE ATOMREAKTORBAU GmbH 4 Dec 1974 [4 Dec 1973] 52521/74 Headings F4S and F4A In a liquid-metal-cooled nuclear reactor installation, a casing 4 contains walls of tubes such as 1, 2, Fig. 1, and a liquid metal heat transfer medium (e.g. a lead-bismuth eutectic) which is compatible with another liquid metal (e.g. sodium) flowing in tubes 1 and with water flowing in tubes 2. The tube walls may be constructed as integral sets of three walls replaceable as a unit when necessary. As shown in Fig. 1, each set comprises two walls of tubes 1 conveying sodium, disposed one on each side of a wall of tubes 2 conveying water, and adjacent sets are separated by a spacer element 3. In another arrangement described (Fig. 2) each tube wall consists of an alternating series of two sodium conveying tubes (5) and one water conveying tube (6). The sodium conveying tubes may be of larger cross-section than the water conveying tubes (Fig. 3). In Fig. 4, the sodium conveying tubes 12, 14 have a cross-section which is generally square but with one or more sides of the section concave. Annular spacing elements 15 encircle the water conveying tubes 13. The individual tube walls may be plane or cylindrical and the tubes may be finned and welded to each other by their fins.
