Abstract

Inorg. -organic plastics with high strength, elasticity and distortion temp. and low flammability, consisting of a polymer-poly-silica gel composite in xerosol form, are produced by mixing an aq. silicate soln. and/or aq. silica sol. with (a) an organic prepolymer with reactive gps. capable of polyaddn., polycondensn. and/or polymerisation, (b) opt. hardeners for the water-soluble silicate and (c) opt. other additives and allowing the resultant system to react completely, the prepolymer also contg. nonionic hydrophilic gp(s). Component (a) comprises an organic polyisocyanate (I) with mol. wt. =250 and with polar nonionic hydrophobic gp(s)., the proportion of these gps. pref. being 1-50, esp. 2-20 wt. %. Used for the prodn. of cellular materials for use in insulants, cavity fillings, packaging materials, structural materials and lightweight building blocks; surface coatings, adhesives, cements, sealants etc.; and extruded fibres and films for the prodn. of synthetic incombustible paper etc.
