Abstract

The machine is particularly for use on postal items, to aid sorting by machine, and has a unit producing two binary information signals controlling the bar code printed. The printing unit has a plate with a series of orifices spaced along a line and to which ink is delivered under pressure so that jets emerge, these being broken up into streams of droplets of uniform dimensions. First and second oblong electrodes apply charges to the drops emerging from opposite sides of a point at the centre of the line, and the potentials applied to the electrodes are functions of the first and second binary signals. An electrical field is generated to divert the charge drops, which are separated.
