Abstract
A contactless check of cold rolled strip for surface defects uses a gap detector which is continuously reciprocated parallel to the reference surface of the strip. This signal is amplified and compared with a reference signal, produced by the detector when at a predetermined distance from the strip. The mismatch signal is analyzed to produce a progressive wave and a standing wave. The waves are analyzed and the condition of the strip is recorded. This control operates accurately enough to be used for the control of a cold rolling mill prodn.
