Abstract

Micelle-colloidl, water-soluble beta-aescin is produced by dissolving beta-aescin in an aqueous inorganic base (pref. alkali or ammonium hydroxide), opt. with the addition of an organic solvent which is at least partially water-soluble (pref. an alcohol); removing any organic solvent which has been added; removing the inorganic base from the resulting aqueous solution (pref. by means of a cation-exchanger), advantageously after adjustment of the solution to pH 4.5-6.5 by addition of acid; and subjecting the resulting solution to spray-drying or freeze-drying. All process steps except spray-drying are pref. carried out at 45 degrees C. Micelle-colloidal, beta-aescin having a water-solubility of not 8 wt. % (pref. is not 12 wt. %) are claimed as new products. Simple procedure enabling beta-aescin with a water-solubility of >15% or even >20% to be produced. Pref. aqueous bases for dissolving the crystalline beta aescinare Na2CO3, K2CO3, NaHCO3, KHCO3, Na2HPO4, K2HPO4, Na3PO4, sodium acetate and potassium acetate, and the corresponding ammonium salts. The concentration of the base is not critical, but is pref. 0.5- to 2.5-N; the pH is generally 7.3-12.5, pref. 7.5-10.5. The addition of water-miscible organic solvent is particularly advantageous when ammonia or a basically reacting salt is used as the base. After removal of any organic solvent, the base is pref. removed by treating with an acidic cation exchange resin. The water-soluble beta-aescin is subsequently isolated by standard spray drying or freeze-drying procedures.
