Abstract

The piezoelectric transducer has a damping device (5) made up of a shaped piece with a truncated part (18) and a hollow part (21). The large base (19) of the truncated part of the device is in contact with a piezoelectric disc (2); the small base (20) is common with the hollow part (21). The hollow part (21) is made up of a concave external surface (28) and a cylindrical internal surface (23). The shape of the various surfaces of the device (5) are such as to provide reflexion of any ultrasonic wave. The material of the device (5) is chosen so as to limit thermal expansion, to make good mechanical contact with the piezoelectric disc and to provide high energy dissipation of any ultrasonic wave. The material is typically stainless or alloy steel. The transducer is used for ultrasonic testing of materials and parts.
