Abstract

The leading end of a screw bolt is bullet shaped and hardened. It is connected to the threaded bolt section by a stem of reduced diameter. The length of this stem corresponds with the total thickness of the parts which are to be joined by the fastener. A hand held gun which uses an explosive cartridge to drive the shot pin onto the screw bolt head is used to carry out the first step of the installation. At that stage, the sheet metal components have been penetrated by the bullet head of the fastener. To complete the installation, the self tapping section of the fastener is screwed into the extruded holes of the two components which are to be assembled.
