Abstract

Elastic sleeves are mounted on a core, which can be removed to apply the sleeve on to a concentric cable joint etc. by prefabricating a fully vulcanised and elastic tube from natural or synthetic rubber; blocking the ends of the tube; inflating it to a bore of greater than the diameter of the core; and freezing the tube sufficiently to be able to cut it into individual sleeves and load prefabricated cores into the sleeves before the sleeve warms up sufficiently to partially relax back on the core. Sleeves may be combined with cores made by prefabricating a rigid extruded plastic tube and machining a relatively deep helical groove on or inside the tube. They are used for making joints by locating an oversize core supporting a prestretched sleeve to saddle a joint in e.g. a cable or hose, and progressively removing the core as a helical strip by pulling to develop a crack along the helical groove in the core. The elastic sleeve contracts to fit the joint as the core is removed.
