Abstract

The drive shaft of a constant velocity asynchronous motor drives a large diameter hub (05), equipped with cooling fins, in the variable speed unit. In this hub is pressed an electromagnetic powder brake unit (08), and the variable speed output shaft (09) is fitted into the central, independently rotating, portion of this unit. By adjusting the excitation current to the brake, the speed of the output shaft relative to the motor can be varied. The rotor is manipulated by a number of Reed contacts, which consist of magnetic contacts protected by a glas tubular sleeve to provide a non-oxidising protective environment.
