Abstract

Continuous prodn. of fibrous cellulose acetate, possessing a fibrous structure and filtration properties comparable to those of asbestos, is as follows: (a) a 2-4 wt. % solution, in an organic solvent of medium polarity, of a cellulose acetate having a viscosity of 25-45 seconds according to ASTM D 1,343-69, and a pptn. agent for cellulose acetate are turbulently mixed together in a ratio by volume (pptn. agent: cellulose acetate solution) of 4:1 - 20:1; (b) the resultant slurry is continuously drawn from the pptn. zone and subjected to a shearing action which produces a surface of 35-55 m2/g having a feathery fibrous form; (c) the ppte. is then washed with a non-dissolving liquid. The turbulent mixing is pref. produced by the particular speeds and directions of the solution and pptn. agent, in particular these two constituents are led in from opposite ends of the upper branch of a T-shaped vessel, the mixt. being drawn off down the 'stroke' of the T. Pref. organic solvent is acetone, and both the pptg. agent and also the washing liquid may be water. The temp. of the pptn. agent is ambient-80 (40-50) degrees C and the volumetric ratio is 12:1-18:1 (15:1). The cellulose acetate solution may contain an insoluble filtering material, esp. cellulose fibres, diatomaceous earth, or a mixture of these, in a ratio by weight (cellulose acetate; insoluble filtering material) of 0.5:1-3:1 (1:1).
