Abstract
The optical waveguide is designed to have a negligible attenuation, and has the core (1) made from a very pure optical glass, the core (1) being surrounded by a liquid sheath (2) which is enclosed by a flexible outer sleeve (3) of plastics material e.g. polyethylene. The liquid sheath (2) has a refractive index which is slightly less than the refractive index of the glass core (1). The outer sleeve (3) pref. has a diameter of the order of several millimetres the core (1) having a diameter of between 50 and 100 microns. The liquid may be a form of ethylene glycol or methyl butane.
