Abstract

Porous hydrotreating catalyst particles composed of Al2P3 contg. 10-20 wt % MoO3 and 1-8 wt % of CoO and/or NiO have a cross-sectional shape characterised by a concavity index of >1.0 (pref. 1.05-1.15), a void fraction of 0.25-0.60 (pref. 0.35-0.50), a ratio of geometric vol. to geometric surface area of 0.0025-0.113 (pref. 0.013-0.064) cm, a specific surface of > 150 (pref. > 200) m2/g, and a pore vol. of 0.35-0.85 cm3/g, the major part of which is derived from pores with a dia of 40-90 A degrees (as measured with Hg at a pressure of 3500 kg/cm2 and a contact angle of 140 degrees). The catalyst are esp. useful for hydrotreating (hydredesulphurising) petroleum residua. Compared with conventional cylindrical particles, catalyst particles with high-concavity cross sections with the above characteristics have a higher activity and a longer life.
