Abstract

PURPOSE:To make possible electrolysis at low voltage by forming a gas and liquid permeable porous layer having no electrode activity on the surface of a cation- exchange membrane and disposing anode or cathode by way of this. CONSTITUTION:Oxides, hydroxides, nitrides and carbides of Ti, Zr, Nb, Ta, V, Mn, Mo, Sn, Sb, W, Bi, etc. are used as porous materials. To form a porous layer on membrance surface from these materials, they are used in the form of powder or particles, and are preferably coupled with a suspension of a fluorine-contg. pollmer, for example, polytetrafluoroethylene. The content of particles having no electrode activity in the porous layer is about 0.01-30mg/cm<2>, and the porous layer is of about 0.01-2,000mu mean fine pore diameters, about 10-99% porosities, about >=1X10<-5>mol/cm<2>.mm..cmHg coefficients of air permeation and about 0.01-200mu thicknesses. The anode and cathode disposed via the porous layer consist of gas and liquid permeable porous layers having electrode activity.
