Abstract

The polyvinyl alcohol is of low viscosity and medium ester index. Pref. a fungicide, corrosion inhibitor and wetting agent are added. The coating is used when offset plates are stored between occasions of use and is cheaper than gum arabic. A typical compsn. comprises, in soln. in 165g. H2O: 30 g. polyvinyl alcohol ('Rhodoinol 4-125'), 0.5 g formaldehyde; 2 g sodium benzoate; 1 g 'Sucrol O' (wetting agent); 1 drop antifoaming agent. Plasticisers such as glycerin and pigments may also be added.
