Abstract

Derivs. of formula (I) (where R is H or lower alkyl and X is halogen, pref. Cl or Br), e.g. 2-chloromethyl-3-carbomethoxy-furan are new cpds. which may be prepd. by reacting an alkyl omega-haloacetoacetate (e.g. methyl omega-chloroacetoacetate) with chloroacetaldehyde, pref. in the presence of an acid-acceptor (esp. an alkali bicarbonate). The use of (I) for the prepn. of cpds. with herbicidal props. (esp. 2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)-methyl-3-furoic acid) is claimed.
