Abstract
Metallic impurities are removed from Hg, in the presence of an electrolyte, with a periodic electric wave of which a continuous component is maintained at a constant value. The electrolyte is opt. an aq. soln. of pH above 7 (above 12) preF. 14, e.g. NaOH soln. The wave opt. comprises a sinusoidal, rectangular, square, or triangular component. It opt. has frequency 5-100,000 (50 or 60) Hz. The process is rapid and effective and Hg losses are minimized.
