Abstract
The two parts are located so their end faces are in contact, a relative rotary motion is applied, e.g. by clamping one part and rotating the other, and the two ends are pressed together, the weld being made due to the combination of the frictional heat and the pressure. Prior to welding, a thermally insulating material is wrapped round the peripheries of the parts adjacent the joint. This reduces heat losses due to thermal conduction between the hot metal and the water, and permits welding in deep water, with water-pressures up to 50 kg/cm2.
