Abstract

In a process for improving the quality of the heat-affected zone on fusion-welded surfaces, esp. steel structural elements welded by hot-wire plasma welding or powder-elements welded by hot-wire plasma welding or powder-welding with Ni alloy or Cr/Ni steel strip electrodes, an arc burner with a non-consumable electrode, the energy of which is sufficient to melt only part of the weld layer, is moved to and fro over the surface of the weld in such a way that its rate of progress along the weld divided by the frequency of its to-and-fro motion is less than the max. dia. of the arc (no units specified). Surface remelting carried out in this manner eliminates cracks in the heat-affected zone caused by the original welding.
