Abstract

The thermite welding process for cable conductors etc. avoids heat cracks by employing a metal piece between the ends of the conductors requiring welding. The metal piece and the ends are heated to the necessary welding temperature. The metal piece either melts and slips out from between the ends or is allowed to fall out by other means. The conductors ends are then pressed together until the joint solidifies. The metal piece may be of the same material as the conductors, e.g. copper, or of a material of higher melting point, e.g. steel, to delay the ends coming together. The process can also be used for aluminium conductors and for joining aluminium to copper conductors.
