Abstract

A vertical electrode for electrolysis with gas generation, has an inert zone of area 5 to 20% of the electrode area, according to electrode dimensions, as a single band or several sections, on one or both sides. The inert area brings about smooth downflow of electrolyte free from gas, and not disturbed by up-flow of gas-electrolyte suspension, giving lower cell voltage for the same current density. The method is particularly useful in electrolysis of hydrochloric acid and sodium chloride by the diaphragm process, reduction electrolysis of saline solns. for producing metals, electrolysis of chlorates and electrolytic prodn. of peracids.
