Abstract
The automatically tipping seat may be used in theatres and public transport. Built into the confines of the seat, the dashpot (6) uses atmospheric air. Pulling down the seat (2) causes a rod (11) to be extended as it pivots (12) about a lever on the seat support bar (4). Air enters freely through a one way valve into the cylinder (8) fixed to, and pivoting around (10), the seat. When released, the distance between the two pivots decreases; this compresses air in dashpot and slows seat action progressively depending on size of the bleed hole. An independent spring gives the tip-up action. The cylinder for the dashpot may be formed as part of the seat frame, with the piston moving along the seat interior.
