Abstract
In the process, an alkaline oxalate is reacted with an aq. soln of a nickel salt, or with an aq. soln of a Ni salt plus an Fe salt, and the ppte obtd is reduced in an autoclave with H2, an alkaline hydroxide, and a small amt of alkali carbonate; in the case of Ni-Fe alloy, the powder obtd from the autocalve is dried and reduced in dry H2. The aq. soln pref. contains 50-250g/l Ni or Ni plus Fe as chlorides, sulphates and/or nitrates, and the autoclave treatment 1-5 hrs at 130-180 degrees C using an initial H2 press. of 4-40 bars. The amt of alkali hydroxide used is 1-3 wt. % less than the stoichiometric amt while the quantity of alkali carbonate is 6-15 wt. % of the alkali hydroxide. Ni or Ni-Fe can be used as a catalyst. The dry redn of Ni-Fe powder pref. consists of 1/2-1 hr. at 400-800 degrees C in hydrogen. The process results in a yield of virtually 100%.
