Abstract

The intensity control and switch system, for lamps, has a large button (B) operating both the supply switch and a potentiometer slider. The potentiometer (P) is coupled in series with a capacitor (C) across the a.c. supply to form an RC circuit whose time constant varies with the potentiometer setting. A triac (TR) is also connected across the supply and acts as a regulating shunt for the current through the lamp. the triac gate is connected over a diac (D1) to the junction between potentiometer and capacitor. The control allows the lamp intensity to be varied between very bright and very dim.
