Abstract
Heat exchanger esp. for coolants in i.c. engines, for circulating a liquid through parallel finned metal tubes in a cross flow draught, where the tubes are mounted at each end into manifolds made of synthetic resin incorporating fillers, specif. glass fibre reinforced polyphenylene oxide, to make the plastic component match the coefficient of thermal expansion of the metal. The composite construction also avoids brazing or welding, reduces risk of interfacial leaks when the unit is subjected to localised rapid temp. changes and utilises thermal conductivity of metal components for rapid heat exchange.
