Abstract

Anthracclic antibiotic (I) prepd. from cultures of Actinomadura carminata sp. nov. is a red crystalline powder having a mol. wt. of 545.5, a m.pt. of 185-187 degrees C (decomp.), soluble in water, lower alcohols, DMF and pyridine, insoluble in ethyl acetate, benzene, chloroform, ether and petrleum ether, its aq. soln. being yellow in acid and violet in alkali, the soln. in sulphuric acid being violet, its UV and visible spectra having the following maxima: lambda max = 236, 256, 293, 464, 478, 492, 512, 525-mm. (ethanol); epsilon1%1cm = 221, 542, 471, 150, 214, 246, 280, 200 resp.; lambda max = 468, 500, 520, 535, 592mm.(pyridine); epsilon1%1cm = 105, 150, 120, 110, 30 resp. The IR spectrum of (I) shows absorption bands at 990, 1020, 1100, 1120, 1200, 1300, 1420, 1450, 1540, 1610, 1710, 3000, 3400 and 3600cm-1. On hydrolysis in 0.2N HC1, (I) gives an anthracyclic aglycone and a carbohydrate fraction. (I) is useful as an antitumour agent. (I) is well absorbed by the gastro-intestinal tract and has a cumulative effect.
