Abstract

The device consists of a vertical rotating column, on top of which is a head housing two horizontal shafts carrying diametrically opposed forked arms, each of which can support a large ladle. The arms terminate in swivel-mountings fitted with vertical extension plates at the top of which are connecting rods which join the top of the mountings to a central horizontal shaft on the rotating head; both ends of the arms and connecting rods are free to swivel. The forked-arms and the connecting rods form parallelograms and the outer-ends of the arms are attached to pistons working in cylinders. When the cylinders are used to raise or lower the ladles, the parallelogram construction ensures that the ladles are always vertical irespective of their height above the tundish.
