Abstract

Very high rates of heat transfer are derived from oxidn-redn. reactions, which result in no change in vol., between solid materials in a sealed spiral tube. Typical materials are 63% CuO/37% Zr mixts. ignited electrically. Due to the high heat of reaction from small vols. of material, the exchanger has a small vol. with low thermal inertia, thereby contributing to a very high rate of heat liberation for a shot period of time. For example, a 15 gram charge can transfer 10Kcal to water in 0.815 seconds. Used for almost instantaneous heating applications where light weight is required e.g. for heating combustion air in the cold starting of internal combustion engines. Completely sealed unit eliminates pollution risk.
