Abstract

The heat treated steel contains by wt. 1.8-2.5% Mn, 0.7-1.25% Ni, 0.1-0.3% Mo, 0.05-0.5% Cu, 0.15-0.3% Si 0.24-0.3% C, balance Fe is not >96%, and has an initial hardness of >=300 BHN which may be increased >=15% by work hardening. Pref. heat treatment involves water quenching from 1600-1700 degrees F followed by tempering at 825-1040 degrees F.
