Abstract

Crude esters are purified by neutralisation under reduced pressure at 140-250 degrees C using an aq. alkali(ne earth) metal hydroxide soln. to adjust the acid index to 0.05 mg KOH/g and simultaneously performing steam distn. by addn. of 0.03-0.15 times the amt. of water based on the wt. of ester during 30 mins. to 4 hrs. at a temp. > the b.pt. of water under the applied pressure, then drying and filtering the solid obtd. by known methods. Neutralisation is pref. carried out at 30-200 mmHg pressure and quantity of water added pref-reduces the ester temp. to 80-100 degrees C.
