Abstract

Hydrostatic bearing consisting of a series of surfaces surrounding a shaft. The surfaces are fixed to the body of the bearing by means of flexible plates. A central fluid supply channel feeds the small gap between the surfaces and the shaft via small holes. The supply channel is not connected rigidly to the surface, but the joint between them is sealed by an O-ring. Friction of the O-ring against its mating surface acts as a damping effect. Additional damping is provided by enclosed volumes of fluid. This damping effect and the flexible mounting plate prevent instabilities due to formation of turbulence in the bearing fluid.
