Abstract
The pivot is a normal spherical ball on the end of one shaft. The housing for the ball is formed by a tubular element closed at one end. A synthetic material bearing pad with a hemispherical depression is fitted inside the tubular piece, then the ball is fitted, the shaft passing through a suitable orifice in the side of the tube. A second synthetic bearing pad is fitted, and the whole assembled with the other shaft by deforming the end of the tube round the end of the shaft. Variations include using tubular pieces open at both ends and an additional closing piece over which the tube is deformed. In every case the bearing is in two parts, and no completely spherical components need be made, other than the ball.
