Abstract

The identification of the type of low flying aircraft is made by a fine analysis of the audible spectrum picked up by a microphone. Peaks in the spectrum correspond to turbine blade noise, etc., and can be unique to an aircraft. Ambiguity caused by Doppler shifts are eliminated by sampling the input waveform at variable times according to the speed which must be known. The speed can be obtained by radar or by a triangular net of microphones. Preferably the inputs from all microphones being used for spectral analysis, for several channels could be processed at once, are passed through sample-hold units E1V1 and then through a further sampler E2V1 driven by a shift register R. The outputs are time multiplexed and pass through an analogue to digital converter and thence via gates to registers RV1. The analyser is not shown.
